It cannot be re-used and ends up in landfills in waste-to-energy plants. And even what is recycled, they are used for different objects and less valuable than the original ones.
Italy is a country that recycles a lot. In Europe, we are the first to recover waste, to 79% of the total collection, equal merit with Germany. "Merit of our country tradition - explains the environmentalist Ermete Realacci - For years we have been recycling rags to make paper or scrap to make iron objects".
However, according to the Corepla (the National Consortium for the collection of plastic packaging), in our country in 2017 only 43.5% of the packaging collected began to be recycled. The rest ended up in waste-to-energy plants (40%) and landfills (16.5%). But of this 43.5% started recycling, how much has been recycled? That is, how many are the new items, new containers, new packaging? "About 40% of the collected plastic cannot be recycled and it ends up in waste-to-energy plants in cement factories", Corpi president, Antonello Ciotti, recently told Corriere.
Therefore, for the Consortium only 60% of the collected plastic is recycled.
